Arteta Declares Arsenal’s Belief in Breaking Trophy Drought This Season

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has voiced strong optimism ahead of the new campaign, expressing confidence that this season could mark the end of the club’s string of close calls in the pursuit of silverware.

Since winning the FA Cup in his first season at the helm in 2019/2020, Arteta has rebuilt Arsenal into a serious title-challenging side but has yet to add another trophy to his record.

Under his guidance, the Gunners have consistently pushed for top honours. They’ve finished as runners-up in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons and, most recently, reached the Champions League semi-finals—their first appearance at that stage since 2009. While progress is evident, the glaring absence of a recent trophy now looms larger, especially following another ambitious summer in the transfer market.

Arsenal’s ownership has backed Arteta once more with significant financial support. Close to £200 million has been invested to reinforce the squad. Among the new arrivals are striker Viktor Gyokeres, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, centre-back Cristhian Mosquera, winger Noni Madueke, and former Chelsea and Real Madrid goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. With these additions, expectations are soaring, and the pressure is mounting for Arteta to finally deliver tangible success.

In his notes ahead of Wednesday’s pre-season match against Spanish side Villarreal, Arteta shared a message of belief and resolve. “We know what our targets are and what we want to achieve this season—there is a big belief in our ability to achieve that,” he wrote. Reflecting on previous campaigns, he admitted that while the team had come “very, very close,” their collective determination would be the key to finally crossing the finish line.

Arteta stressed the importance of staying focused on the daily grind and upholding the internal standards necessary to reach the highest levels. “We have to set the demands that we want within this goal,” he emphasized. “Because that’s the most important thing—the internal demands have to always exceed any external demand. That is what we are trying to achieve every single day.”

The manager also highlighted the emotional connection between the players and supporters at the Emirates Stadium as a vital asset. He urged fans to rally behind the team from the outset, helping foster an atmosphere that makes Arsenal feel unbeatable on home turf. “We want our people to start connecting with our players straight away, to start to build momentum and to start to feel that at home we are invincible,” Arteta said.

His vision is for the Emirates to be a fortress once again—powered by passion, unity, and the unwavering energy of the club’s faithful. “That we play here with such passion, energy and connection with our people, that we are going to win the game.”

The Gunners are set to launch their Premier League season in emphatic fashion, facing a stern test away to Manchester United on August 17—a fixture that could set the tone for a campaign in which Arsenal’s ambitions are higher than ever.

What You Should Know

Mikel Arteta is entering the new season with renewed determination and the full backing of Arsenal’s board, following a summer of heavy investment.

Having narrowly missed out on major honours in recent years, the club believes it’s time to convert progress into trophies. The manager has made it clear that belief, daily discipline, and home-ground dominance will be essential if Arsenal are to end their title drought.
