Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has reassured residents of Maiduguri that there is no immediate threat of flooding from the Alau Dam, despite growing concerns following recent heavy rains in the region.
During an inspection of the dam’s ongoing reconstruction works, Zulum addressed the rising anxiety, stating that technical assessments show the situation remains under control.
“As at now, based on the engineering knowledge we are having, we concluded that there is no cause for alarm,” the governor said.
The fears stem from surging water levels at the Alau Dam, which is situated near Maiduguri. However, Zulum explained that new water channels had been created to reduce pressure, leading to a four-inch drop in the dam’s water level in recent days, with projections of continued decline.
Still, the governor remained cautious, noting that natural conditions can change rapidly. “Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. We are working and shall continue to monitor this programme,” he said, while also commending the contractors for the quality of work so far.
Zulum emphasized the importance of public cooperation in preventing flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas. He strongly warned against building structures on waterways and clogging drainage systems.
“Most importantly, I want to warn the people of this state to desist from building on waterways, and they should be very careful,” he cautioned.
He urged citizens to take personal responsibility for their surroundings. “If you have drainage in front of your house, you have to make sure you clean it all the time,” he added.
To prevent future flood risks, Zulum revealed that the state government plans to revisit the original master plan of Maiduguri. This move, he explained, is aimed at correcting distortions and restoring clear water pathways to ensure effective drainage.
“We must go back to the drawing board and then look at the master plan and ensure that all tributaries and all waterways shall be cleared so as to allow inflow of water to the main canal,” Zulum said.
He concluded by stressing the need to enforce environmental standards, even if unpopular, in the interest of public safety.

Governor Zulum has reassured Maiduguri residents that the current water level at Alau Dam poses no immediate flooding threat.
While proactive steps such as opening new water channels have reduced pressure on the dam, the governor emphasized continued monitoring and public cooperation—especially in keeping drainage systems clear and avoiding construction on waterways.
