Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, on Tuesday disclosed that the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) will provide a ₦1 billion relief fund to assist victims displaced by the recent deadly attack on the Yelewata community in Benue State.

She made this announcement during a condolence visit to the New Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House, where she met with state officials and community representatives. The June attack, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen, left more than 100 people dead and forced many residents to flee their homes.

In her remarks, the First Lady stated that the donation aligns with RHI’s mission of offering sustainable support to vulnerable families across Nigeria.

“On behalf of the governing council of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI will be making a donation of ₦1 billion to help displaced families get back on their feet, return to earning a living, and have a better life.

“This is in line with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Initiative as captured in our motto: Towards a Better Life for Families,” Remi Tinubu stated.

She expressed profound sadness over the scale of the violence and its impact on families, urging Nigerians to view the period as one that demands collective resilience and compassion.

“As a mother, I urge all of us to learn to accept this times as very challenging times. Our job is to play complementary and supportive role.

“It is heart wrenching to believe that people want to live in peace then destruction will come suddenly.

“So, for me, hope is not lost. We’ve heard you and I believe my sister the first lady of Nasarawa state has heard you,” Remi Tinubu said.

The First Lady’s visit was part of a broader federal effort to reach out to communities affected by insecurity and displacement, with a focus on providing immediate relief and long-term recovery pathways.

What You Should Know

Remi Tinubu’s visit to Benue and the ₦1 billion donation from the Renewed Hope Initiative highlight a significant presidential-level response to the tragic Yelewata attack that claimed over 100 lives.

The funds are aimed at helping displaced families restore their livelihoods and rebuild their homes.

The Renewed Hope Initiative’s motto, “Towards a Better Life for Families,” reflects the long-term vision of national healing and support. Her speech also emphasized empathy, unity, and resilience in the face of increasing violence in rural communities.

This marks one of the most substantial single humanitarian interventions from the presidency under the Tinubu administration.
