Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has suggested that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may soon return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Sheriff made the claim during a Monday appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, where he discussed the growing momentum within opposition politics.

Obi recently joined a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside other political figures, aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Although Obi has shown interest in running again, Sheriff said credible information suggests that he will likely return to the PDP and seek the party’s ticket.

“Atiku has been the vice president of Nigeria. So for him, (it is) president or nothing. Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President,” Sheriff said.

“Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP,” he added, pointing out that this could significantly impact the political ambitions of both Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi.

What You Should Know

Ali Modu Sheriff’s comments add fuel to ongoing political speculation about alignments ahead of the 2027 elections. Peter Obi, who gained immense popularity during the 2023 race, is currently aligned with a broader opposition coalition seeking to challenge the APC’s dominance.

A return to the PDP could alter the political dynamics within the opposition, especially as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also expected to pursue the presidential ticket.

Sheriff’s remarks reflect the high-stakes maneuvering already underway, as influential figures like Obi, Atiku, and others begin strategizing for what promises to be a heated 2027 electoral contest.
