Benue in Turmoil as Herdsmen Strike SGF’s Hometown Days After Presidential Visit

Suspected herdsmen have launched a violent assault on Wannune community in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, the hometown of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

The attack, which reportedly claimed numerous lives and left many others wounded, unfolded barely 48 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state to address growing concerns about the security crisis in the region.

The assailants, believed to be armed herdsmen, descended on the town in what eyewitnesses described as a brutal and indiscriminate onslaught. The scale of the violence threw the community into chaos, forcing residents to flee in all directions.

Benue attack

A youth corps member serving in the area recounted the horror, sharing a desperate plea for help: “Everyone is running into the bushes for safety. Please let Nigerians pray for us. The herdsmen are ravaging the environment now.”

The timing of the attack has further unsettled the state, coming so soon after President Tinubu’s high-profile visit aimed at reassuring the people of Benue and demonstrating federal resolve to stem the tide of insecurity.

During his visit, the President met with local stakeholders, security chiefs, and community leaders, issuing strong directives to the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to identify and apprehend those behind the recent bloodshed.

This new attack, however, has thrown a shadow over those promises, raising questions about the effectiveness of the President’s engagement and the ability of security agencies to implement immediate protective measures.

Critics have pointed to the proximity of this assault to the earlier massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area—where over 200 residents were brutally murdered—as a troubling sign that state and federal responses have not matched the urgency of the threat.

The Yelewata killings, which triggered nationwide condemnation, were still fresh in the minds of Benue residents when the Wannune attack occurred, deepening a sense of vulnerability and fear among local communities.

The repeated targeting of both rural settlements and strategic areas of political importance has amplified concerns that the crisis is slipping out of control, despite public assurances from government officials.

As the violence rages on, urgent calls have been renewed for swift intervention, not only from security operatives but also from the highest levels of government.

With Wannune now reeling from tragedy and other parts of Benue on edge, the coming days will likely test the strength of federal resolve and the resilience of a people repeatedly caught in the crossfire of a deepening security crisis.
