Flamengo delivered a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in Friday’s Club World Cup clash, with substitute Bruno Henrique playing a pivotal role in what became a commanding victory for the Brazilian champions.

The win at Lincoln Financial Field continued South America’s strong showing at the tournament, extending their unbeaten streak to nine matches.

Despite a promising start from the Premier League side, which saw Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead in the 13th minute following a defensive error from Flamengo’s Wesley, the lead proved short-lived as the Brazilian league leaders stormed back after the break.

Neto’s goal, his second of the competition, came as a reward for Chelsea’s bright opening spell, where new signing Liam Delap also had an effort tipped over in his first start.

Roared on by a sea of red-and-black supporters who dominated the 54,019-strong crowd, Flamengo surged forward in the second half with renewed energy and purpose.

Though they failed to convert their pressure into goals before halftime, the momentum began to shift with Gerson nearly capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Reece James just minutes into the restart. His mishit shot trickled to Gonzalo Plata, who couldn’t convert at the back post.

The breakthrough arrived shortly after Bruno Henrique’s introduction in the 56th minute. The 34-year-old veteran, once capped by Brazil, changed the complexion of the game.

On 62 minutes, a cross from Gerson was nodded back into the six-yard box by Plata, and Bruno Henrique was on hand to steer the ball past Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez, setting off jubilant celebrations from the Flamengo faithful.

Just three minutes later, Bruno Henrique was involved again, this time heading down a corner for Danilo—once of Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Juventus—who lashed the ball home to give Flamengo a deserved lead.

Chelsea’s woes deepened when substitute Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute for a dangerous challenge on Ayrton Lucas, leaving the London club with ten men for the remainder of the match.

Enzo Fernandez came close to rescuing a point for Chelsea, but Flamengo sealed the result seven minutes from time. Plata’s shot deflected into the path of Wallace Yan, another substitute, who made no mistake to slot home Flamengo’s third goal of the evening.

The result left Flamengo firmly atop Group D with two wins from two games and in strong position to qualify for the Round of 16. Chelsea, having won their opener against Los Angeles FC, must now defeat Esperance of Tunisia in their final group game to progress.

This victory follows Botafogo’s stunning triumph over European champions Paris Saint-Germain a day earlier, reinforcing the dominance of South American clubs at this year’s edition of FIFA’s revamped competition.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca had rotated his squad for this encounter, but the changes couldn’t prevent his side from faltering against an inspired Flamengo outfit, who made the most of every chance and showed their continental pedigree.

What you should know
Bruno Henrique’s substitution proved decisive as Flamengo overturned a first-half deficit to beat Chelsea 3-1 in the Club World Cup.

The win keeps South American clubs unbeaten in nine games at the tournament and pushes Flamengo close to the knockout stage, while Chelsea’s path to qualification now hinges on their final group match against Esperance.
