President Bola Tinubu on Sunday paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd.), as he marked his 83rd birthday, describing him as a patriot of “uncommon integrity” and a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
In a personally signed message, Tinubu lauded the retired general for his enduring contributions to national peace, stability, and good governance across Africa, particularly highlighting his pivotal role in Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999.
“Gen. Abubakar’s legacy, particularly his role in leading Nigeria through a peaceful transition to democratic rule in 1999, remains a watershed moment in the nation’s history,” Tinubu wrote. “His selfless act of handing over power paved the way for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and strengthened the principle of constitutional democracy.”
The president also commended Abubakar’s ongoing efforts in his post-retirement years, especially his work as Chairman of the National Peace Committee, a platform he has used to champion dialogue, mediate political disputes, and foster credible electoral processes.
“In an era where unity and leadership are more critical than ever, General Abubakar’s voice of moderation, reason, and statesmanship is deeply valued,” Tinubu noted.
The tribute also emphasized the influence of Abubakar’s example on generations of public servants, citing his calm leadership and unwavering devotion to national harmony.
“As he marks another year of life, Nigeria honours his sacrifices, wisdom, and unyielding devotion to the peace and unity of our great nation,” Tinubu added. “I wish the former Head of State continued strength, good health, and divine grace in the years ahead.”
