A deadly night attack by suspected armed herdsmen on Yelewata community in Benue State has left multiple casualties in its wake.
The assault, which occurred around 10:00 pm on Friday, resulted in numerous injuries and the confirmed deaths of three security personnel.
Early reports as of 4:00 am Saturday indicate that at least 16 residents sustained varying degrees of injuries, with the actual death toll among civilians still unconfirmed as authorities continue to assess the situation.
In a tragic turn, Nigerian Army and NSCDC operatives responding to a distress call were ambushed in Daudu, en route to the troubled area. The ambush claimed the lives of two soldiers and one Civil Defence officer, sparking widespread grief.
“These brave men paid the ultimate price in service to our people. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” a local source stated, paying tribute to the fallen operatives.
Survivors have been rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi, where medical personnel are in urgent need of blood donations to aid ongoing emergency care.
Citizens and aid groups have been called upon to provide immediate humanitarian support, especially in the form of blood and medical assistance.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims, especially our fallen heroes in uniform,” one resident expressed, urging media and the public to show respect and sensitivity by avoiding the circulation of graphic images from the scene.
