The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has launched an investigation into eight of its staff members following allegations of negligence in the treatment of road accident victims captured in a viral video.
Those under investigation include four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants, according to Dr. Bioku Muftau, the hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, who addressed the media on Monday. He emphasized that any staff found guilty of dereliction of duty would be held accountable.
The investigation follows the circulation of a video on social media showing accident victims allegedly abandoned at the hospital’s Emergency Unit after being brought in by a good Samaritan.
The individual who recorded the footage claimed the victims were left unattended, with one staff member allegedly citing a lack of gloves as the reason for the delay.
Dr. Muftau clarified that the patient with a head injury seen in the video had since been treated, stabilized, and discharged on the same day. He assured the public that the findings of the probe ordered by Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, would be made public once completed.
“All the staff who were on duty that day will be investigated,” he stated. “So far, four doctors, two nurses, and two health assistants are involved.”
He also rejected claims that the hospital was overwhelmed during the incident. “This hospital is blessed with a lot of staff. As I speak with you, we have over 100 consultants in various specialities. In neurosurgery alone, we have three,” he added.
