Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commissioned three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line on Sunday at the National Theatre Station, a significant step toward enhancing the city’s public transportation system.

The unveiling, announced via the governor’s official social media channels, marks a pivotal moment in Lagos’ ongoing efforts to address urban mobility challenges in one of Africa’s most populous cities.

Each of the new train sets consists of four cars, effectively doubling the passenger capacity of the Blue Line. This upgrade is expected to reduce wait times, shorten travel durations, and improve service reliability for thousands of daily commuters. “With this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line,” Sanwo-Olu stated, emphasizing the state’s goal of achieving train arrivals every 10 minutes to ensure smoother and more efficient transit.

LAGOS 2

The governor attributed the success of the project to the critical support of President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government, which facilitated the procurement and delivery of the new trains. This collaboration underscores the importance of federal-state partnerships in driving large-scale infrastructure projects.

Looking ahead, Sanwo-Olu revealed that more trains are slated to arrive before the end of 2025, this time for the LRMT Red Line. These new Red Line trains are projected to have twice the capacity of the Blue Line units, further expanding Lagos’ rail network.

Additionally, construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line, stretching from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is progressing steadily, signaling continued investment in the state’s rail infrastructure.

“We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started,” Sanwo-Olu declared, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transforming the city’s transportation landscape.

The expansion of the LRMT system is part of a broader strategy to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and provide affordable, reliable transport options for Lagos’ growing population.

The commissioning of the new train sets has been met with optimism from commuters and urban planners alike, who see it as a critical step toward a more connected and efficient Lagos. With further developments on the horizon, the state is positioning itself as a leader in modern urban transit solutions in Nigeria.
