In a landmark move to advance Nigeria’s energy transition and economic development, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, inaugurated the country’s first-ever Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) hub in Yola, Adamawa State, on Tuesday.

The facility, developed by Greenville LNG, marks a significant milestone in the federal government’s ambitious “Decade of Gas” initiative, aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves to drive industrialization, energy security, and inclusive growth.

The inauguration of the Yola LCNG hub represents a pioneering public-private partnership designed to enhance energy accessibility and sustainability across Nigeria, particularly in the historically underserved North-East region.

Speaking at the event, Minister Ekpo emphasized the transformative potential of the project, describing it as a “beacon of hope and opportunity” for Adamawa State and the broader region.

“This facility is a testament to what we can achieve through collaboration between the government and private sector,” Ekpo said. “For too long, the Northeast has faced infrastructural challenges that have constrained its economic potential. Today, we are turning the tide, ensuring that the benefits of Nigeria’s gas resources reach every corner of our nation.”

A Strategic Step Toward Energy Transformation

The LCNG hub, strategically located in Yola, is a cutting-edge facility that integrates liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) to provide cleaner and more affordable energy alternatives to traditional fuels like diesel and petrol.

The innovative model is designed to power vehicles, industrial equipment, and other applications, offering a sustainable solution that aligns with global trends toward cleaner energy.

Ekpo highlighted the project’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to leverage Nigeria’s gas resources for economic transformation. “President Tinubu has made it a national priority to harness our gas wealth for industrialization and social development,” he noted. “This LCNG hub is a perfect example of innovation in action, delivering not just energy but jobs, business opportunities, and hope for a more inclusive future.”

The minister also underscored the project’s role in fostering peace and stability through economic empowerment. By creating jobs and enabling businesses in the Northeast, the facility is expected to contribute to regional development and address longstanding socio-economic challenges.

A Call for Further Investment

Ekpo urged other investors and gas developers to follow Greenville LNG’s lead and invest in similar LCNG projects across Nigeria. “There is still so much ground to cover and so many communities that remain underserved,” he said. “We invite more stakeholders to join us in this transformative journey to ensure that no region is left behind.”

The minister also expressed gratitude to the government and people of Adamawa State for their support, particularly for providing land and creating a conducive environment for the project’s construction. He emphasized the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of CNG, noting that it is a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol, aligning with President Tinubu’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of Nigerians.

Adamawa’s Commitment to a Greener Future

Representing Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Adamawa State’s Deputy Governor, Kaletapwa Farauta, commended the Federal Government for facilitating the investment. She highlighted the state’s alignment with the project’s goals, particularly its focus on cleaner energy sources in the face of climate change challenges.

“Climate change is real, and its impacts are evident in our state,” Farauta said. “Every policy and project we undertake is geared toward protecting our environment and ensuring that our citizens breathe healthy air. This LCNG hub is a step in the right direction, and we are committed to ensuring its success.”

Farauta also called for continued federal intervention to support similar initiatives, pledging the state government’s cooperation to maximize the project’s impact.

Greenville LNG’s Ambitious Investment

Eddy Broeke, chairman of Greenville LNG, revealed that the company is investing over $1 billion in Nigeria’s energy sector, with plans to replicate the LCNG model in other states. Broeke called on the government to provide ongoing support to ensure the success of these projects, emphasizing their potential to drive economic growth and energy accessibility nationwide.

“This is just the beginning,” Broeke said. “Our commitment to Nigeria’s energy future is unwavering, and we look forward to working with the government to bring more of these transformative projects to fruition.”

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Yola LCNG hub sets a new standard for energy innovation in Nigeria, offering a scalable model for delivering clean, affordable energy to underserved regions. By leveraging advanced technology and fostering public-private collaboration, the project underscores the federal government’s commitment to its “Decade of Gas” agenda, which seeks to position natural gas as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy security and economic development.

As the nation continues to struggle with energy challenges, the Yola facility serves as a powerful symbol of progress, demonstrating that inclusive and sustainable development is within reach. With more investments and partnerships on the horizon, Nigeria is poised to unlock the full potential of its natural gas resources, paving the way for a brighter, cleaner, and more prosperous future.
