Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has commended the performances of Nigeria’s home-based players, asserting that they possess the necessary attributes to compete effectively at the top level of international football.

Historically, many managers of Nigeria’s senior national team have come under fire for consistently overlooking talents from the local league.

However, Chelle appears determined to shift that narrative. His comments came in the aftermath of Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana in the Unity Cup, held in London on Wednesday, where he featured some home-based players in the match lineup.

Addressing journalists after the win, Chelle emphasized his commitment to offering opportunities to players from the domestic scene. He maintained that identifying potential match-winners among them was a crucial aspect of his role as head coach.

“As I mentioned earlier, these players possess real quality, and it is part of my responsibility to assess and make the right choices. If I make mistakes, then I bear the consequences. But the truth is that I am eager to offer these players chances to show what they can bring, because winning remains my top priority,” Chelle stated.

He further highlighted the unpredictable nature of football, saying it was important to discover players who might deliver decisive moments when it matters most. “Maybe among them is someone who can score a last-minute goal against Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Lesotho. That is why I must keep working—always looking for the best outcome for Nigeria, for the home-based players, and for the rest of the team.”

Expressing satisfaction with his current crop of players, Chelle noted his excitement about the upcoming fixtures. “I am proud to be with these players, and our attention is now on the next match in September.”

With their victory over Ghana secured, Nigeria is now preparing to take on Jamaica in the Unity Cup final on Saturday. Chelle acknowledged the strength of the Jamaican side, praising their quality and depth, while reiterating Nigeria’s ambition to win the tournament.

Although pleased with the team’s recent performance, the Malian coach pointed out that the squad still requires additional training sessions to sharpen their cohesion and strategy. He emphasized that ongoing improvement is vital as the team looks ahead to tougher challenges in upcoming matches.

What you should know
Eric Chelle is determined to integrate more home-based players into Nigeria’s national team setup.

Following a 2-1 win against Ghana, he praised their performance and expressed a strong desire to give local talents a bigger role as Nigeria prepares for the Unity Cup final against Jamaica and future international fixtures.
