Manchester United suffered yet another humiliation on Wednesday night, falling 1-0 to a Southeast Asian XI in front of 72,550 fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.

The defeat deepened the gloom around a club still reeling from its worst Premier League finish since 1974.

Manager Ruben Amorim’s side looked uninspired and sluggish in the sweltering 32°C (90°F) heat. Supporters began leaving before full-time, and those who stayed voiced their displeasure with loud boos at the final whistle.

The dismal display has further exposed United’s year-long struggle for goals, amplifying reports that the club is prepared to spend £62.5 million ($85 million) to bring in Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Amorim, visibly frustrated throughout the game, declined to confirm the deal but acknowledged the dissatisfaction from fans.

“We were slow and we still don’t have it in us to win every exercise in training, every game,” the Portuguese coach admitted. “The boos from the fans, it’s something that we need. These people believe in Manchester United no matter what the context. It’s our duty to improve the team next season.”

Despite naming several first-team regulars — including Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, and Andre Onana — United offered little in the way of creativity or cutting edge. The ASEAN All Stars came closest early, with Onana making key saves to prevent an early deficit.

Mainoo was United’s brightest spark in the first half, seeing one long-range effort tipped over and another cleared off the line. Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho tried to inject life into the second half, but the breakthrough came at United’s end.

In the 71st minute, Burmese forward Maung Maung Lwin took advantage of a defensive lapse, breaking through and rifling the ball into the top corner past Tom Heaton. The veteran keeper later denied a second to limit the damage.

With just one more post-season friendly against a Hong Kong XI on Friday, United will be desperate to avoid further embarrassment as questions continue to mount over the team’s direction, fitness, and morale.

What you should know
Manchester United’s post-season woes continued with a shock 1-0 defeat to a Southeast Asian XI in Kuala Lumpur.

Manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged the team’s lack of intensity and accepted fans’ boos as a wake-up call. With offensive issues persisting, United may push ahead with a big-money move for Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha.
