A tragic explosion on Monday afternoon at a bus stop along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway in Abuja resulted in the death of one individual and left another injured.

The blast occurred directly opposite the Mogadishu Cantonment in the Asokoro district of the Federal Capital Territory, prompting immediate response from multiple security and emergency agencies.

The Nigerian Army, in an initial update posted to its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, confirmed the explosion and assured the public that the situation was under control. The brief message read: “BREAKING NEWS, explosion at bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja. Situation under control, details later….”

Although the army did not disclose further specifics in its statement, early reports suggest the explosion may have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). A military source at the scene, who spoke anonymously, indicated that the deceased individual might have been a suicide bomber. According to the source, the explosive was believed to be hidden in a rubber container situated near the barracks.

However, other military personnel on ground suggested that the cause of the blast might have been less sinister, speculating that it could have resulted from a mobile phone device rather than a traditional IED. This conflicting information highlights the uncertainty surrounding the incident as investigations continue.

In response to the explosion, security and emergency teams quickly mobilized to the area. Officers from the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were seen at the scene, working to assess the damage and secure the location.

While full details are yet to emerge, the incident has sparked renewed concern over safety and potential threats in and around Abuja. Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the deceased or whether the injured individual was a bystander or somehow connected to the suspected explosive.

The site of the explosion, directly across from a major military facility, raises questions about the potential intent behind the blast and the challenges of securing public spaces in the nation’s capital.

As of now, the Nigerian Army and other agencies involved in the response have yet to release further details or a definitive cause of the explosion. The public remains on alert as investigations proceed.
