The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Retd.), has called on citizens to “put the interest of Rivers State first” in all their actions, stressing the need for collective responsibility in building a more united and progressive state.
Vice Admiral Ibas made the appeal during a thanksgiving service at the Ecumenical Centre in Port Harcourt, held to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the creation of Rivers State.
Acknowledging the steady development of the state, he noted that significant work still lies ahead in key areas such as rural electrification, quality education, youth empowerment, and the establishment of inclusive and transparent public institutions.
He emphasized that development must not remain a privilege for a few, but rather a shared experience across all communities.
Expressing optimism about the future, the administrator said the current challenges facing the state will pass, and Rivers will emerge stronger, more united, and determined.
He also urged religious leaders to be defenders of truth and symbols of moral strength in society. “Let your pulpit be an altar of healing,” he said, encouraging messages that promote love, unity, integrity, and hope.
Reflecting on the significance of the anniversary, Vice Admiral Ibas noted that while it is important to celebrate the past, focus must be placed on preparing for a future that nurtures leaders with character and integrity.
The thanksgiving service was attended by top dignitaries, including the Chief Judge of the State, Secretary to the State Government, Acting Head of Service, service commanders, heads of paramilitary agencies, local government administrators, and traditional rulers.
Delivering the sermon, Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Barasin Ogan, emphasized the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation as a foundation for peace and collective progress.
