In a bid to calm the growing unrest within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s Special Reconciliation Committee, chaired by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, met with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah on Friday in Enugu.

The meeting, held behind closed doors at the Government House, also had in attendance committee members including former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, and former Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo.

This high-level visit comes amid growing tension in the South-East PDP following the zonal leadership’s re-nomination of Sunday Udeh-Okoye to serve the remainder of the National Secretary’s term.

Saraki Mbah

Leaders in the zone had previously warned of a possible mass exodus if their decision was not respected, asserting in a communiqué: “In the event that our position is not promptly implemented by the Party, the South East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward.”

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Saraki explained that the visit was part of the committee’s broader effort to ensure the PDP’s upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and possible convention proceed without rancor.

“We are members of the PDP Reconciliation and Strategy Committee that was set up recently by the PDP Governors’ Forum,” Saraki said. “We are here in Enugu State to consult with one of our leaders, Governor Peter Mbah, who is the leader of South East PDP.”

He emphasized the importance of the South East to the PDP, calling the region the “bedrock” of the party’s popularity and strength.

“We’ve had a very, very useful discussion and we are going away with some of the suggestions that we have here. With this, we can say here in Enugu we laid the foundation for a greater new PDP that is coming,” he added.

Saraki praised Governor Mbah’s leadership within the PDP and commended his performance in Enugu State, saying it serves as a reflection of what a PDP-led government can achieve nationwide.

The reconciliation committee was formed in response to recent waves of defection and internal discontent across the party, with a mandate to rebuild unity and reposition the PDP ahead of its forthcoming national events.

What you should know
This visit to Enugu marks the start of the PDP reconciliation team’s mission to calm internal tensions and prevent further division.

The South East’s firm stance signals its critical influence in shaping the party’s future, while the leadership of figures like Mbah and Saraki could prove decisive in restoring party unity.
