Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have secured a place at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals after a hard-fought victory over defending champions Senegal in the CAF U20 Cup of Nations quarter-final clash in Ismailia, Egypt, on Monday.

The tense encounter ended goalless after extra time, with Nigeria emerging victorious 3-1 in the penalty shootout.

The match, held at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium, showcased Nigeria’s resilience and grit, echoing the rallying call from NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi for a renewed spirit and determination. Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt was the standout performer, making a crucial save in the 54th minute to deny Ibrahima Dieng, and later saving two penalties in the shootout.

The opening half saw Senegal come close to scoring, including a near-miss in the 27th minute following a slip from Harcourt, and Dieng hitting the post 15 minutes later. Nigeria regained control in the final stages of regular time, with Divine Oliseh, Kparobo Arierhi, and Precious Benjamin narrowly missing opportunities to seal the game.

Extra time produced more drama as Nigeria pressed for a winner. Tahir Maigana’s long-range effort tested Senegalese goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho, while Israel Ayuma’s curling free kick forced a desperate save.

In the shootout, Harcourt denied Senegal’s Pierre Diatta Dorival, and after Precious Benjamin opened the scoring, Emmanuel Chukwu and Israel Ayuma followed up with clinical finishes. Senegal converted just one of their four attempts, with Ousmane Konate’s final kick smashing against the post to seal Nigeria’s triumph.

Following the win, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau praised the team’s performance and emphasized the next target. “The ticket to the World Cup was the first objective and we have achieved that. The second objective is to win the trophy,” he said. “I have reminded them that the country is waiting for them to bring the trophy back home.”

Nigeria will now face the winner of the tie between South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the semi-finals.
