Veteran forward Ahmed Musa has been named captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London, as confirmed by Nigeria Premier Football League side, Kano Pillars.
The four-nation event, set to take place from May 26 to 31, 2025, at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, will see Nigeria compete alongside Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Currently shining for Kano Pillars, Musa has tallied eight goals and two assists in the NPFL season, reigniting public calls for his return to the national team. His leadership was confirmed by Kano Pillars on their official social media platforms, with the club noting he will lead the team against longtime rivals Ghana in the semi-finals on May 28.
The Nigeria-Ghana clash is expected to be a headline match of the tournament, continuing a storied football rivalry on the African continent.
Musa, one of the most experienced players in Nigerian football history, rejoins the squad after missing recent World Cup qualifiers. His presence is anticipated to bring veteran insight and leadership, especially in the absence of several Europe-based players who may miss the tournament due to club commitments and FIFA constraints.
The Unity Cup offers the Super Eagles a key platform to build cohesion ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. It will also serve as a proving ground for fresh talents under new head coach Eric Chelle, who plans to use the tournament to assess players and tactical options.
Beyond the pitch, the week-long tournament aims to highlight Afro-Caribbean football heritage, blending sport with cultural festivities and community events.
The competition concludes on May 31 with the final and a third-place playoff, as Nigeria looks to fine-tune its squad and assert its presence ahead of international duties.
