Vice President Kashim Shettima is back in Abuja after attending the inauguration of Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema alongside other African leaders.

In a demonstration of Nigeria’s support for democratic governance on the continent, Senator Shettima, standing in for President Bola Tinubu, arrived in Libreville on Saturday for the ceremony, which drew thousands of Gabonese citizens and dignitaries from around the world.

Oligui Nguema secured a resounding victory in Gabon’s April 12 presidential election, earning 94.85% of the vote—amounting to 58,074 ballots cast in his favour. He had served as interim president since August 2023.

The event, held at the Stade de l’Amitié sino-gabonaise in Libreville, featured military parades, ceremonial march-pasts, and vibrant cultural displays showcasing Gabon’s heritage.

In his inaugural address, President Nguema expressed gratitude for the strong backing from the electorate, which enabled his rise as a democratically elected leader.

He vowed to focus on national development and youth empowerment to safeguard the future, while also pledging to tackle insecurity, criminality, and inadequate water supply.

He acknowledged the importance of the United Nations and pledged collaboration, while also urging African nations to pursue peaceful coexistence.

Joining Shettima at the event were top leaders such as President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, and many others from across the continent.

Shettima was accompanied by Hon. Usman Bello Kumo and Dr. Aliyu Modibbo on the trip and has now returned to the Nigerian capital.

What you should know
President Oligui Nguema’s transition from interim to elected leader marks a critical phase in Gabon’s political journey following the 2023 military intervention.

His overwhelming electoral win reflects strong public support, though it also raises questions about electoral competitiveness in the country.

For Nigeria, Vice President Shettima’s presence signals continued diplomatic engagement and backing for democratic transitions across Africa. The inauguration provided a platform for regional leaders to reaffirm ties and show solidarity amid broader calls for peace and development on the continent.

Nguema’s promises to address insecurity and improve infrastructure, especially water supply, are central to stabilising Gabon’s internal landscape and restoring confidence at home and abroad.
