President Bola Tinubu has restated his government’s determination to take back ungoverned spaces—particularly forest regions—in the North-West and across Nigeria by employing advanced surveillance and technological tools to fight kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry.
In a statement released by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu made the pledge while speaking to Katsina State elders and leaders during a state dinner held at the Government House in Katsina on Friday night.
“On the issue of security raised by former governor Aminu Bello Masari again this evening, yes, I agree that security is a challenge for the country. I addressed the men and women of the armed forces earlier today and assured them that we will do everything to fight terrorism and banditry.
“We will invest more in technology and take over the forests. Security is a national issue, not just at the local or regional levels. If we genuinely need investment in Nigeria, we must address security.
“Investment is cowardly, and it will not go where there is banditry and terrorism. We will solve the problem together with the states and local councils,” he said.
Tinubu pointed to signs of economic improvement in Nigeria, attributing recent positive results to bold policy steps.
He also mentioned plans by the federal government to consider expanding the airport in Katsina to help generate jobs and boost economic activity.
He gave an assurance that those affected by terrorism would be supported to help them recover and rebuild their lives.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to former Governor Aminu Bello Masari for his backing in securing the endorsement of the North-West, which played a part in his emergence as the APC’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 election.
He also thanked the governors who accepted the invitation of Katsina State Governor Radda to attend both the commissioning of projects and his daughter’s wedding.
The governors present included those of Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kwara States.
President Tinubu praised Katsina natives for their leadership roles in national affairs and described former President Muhammadu Buhari as a man of integrity who made valuable contributions to the nation’s progress.
“I wish him well,” he said.
Governor Dikko Radda said the state had set up a security agency that collects and shares intelligence.
He explained that the planned airport upgrade—which includes terminals for passengers and cargo, and fire service infrastructure—would cost N54 billion and is expected to generate 2,700 direct jobs.
Former Governor Masari thanked the President for appointing two ministers from the state to the Federal Executive Council.
He also appreciated the appointments of Kaduna indigenes as special advisers, board chairpersons, and leaders of regulatory agencies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
On why he backed Tinubu’s 2023 presidential run, Masari said:
“You have the political will and courage to face the challenges of this country. You know the problem with humans: There will be resistance when new changes and a new social order are coming. And if you are not strong enough and determined, you will succumb, and the problem continues.
“But leadership is not about when it is all well. The hard way is the best; you know leaders during hard times. I know and believe you can do it; you have the courage.”
Masari emphasized that tackling insecurity in the North-West requires a comprehensive, grassroots-driven approach.
What you should know
President Tinubu’s resolve to reclaim ungoverned forest areas using technology is a critical step in addressing Nigeria’s deep-rooted security issues.
These forests have long served as hideouts for bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists, especially in the North-West. By focusing on surveillance and intelligence-led interventions, the government aims to disrupt criminal activities, restore state control, and safeguard rural communities.
The long-term effects could include improved safety for residents, a resurgence of agricultural and economic activity, and renewed investor confidence in affected regions.
Tinubu’s plan also indicates a broader understanding that economic growth and national security are closely linked.
The proposed airport expansion in Katsina shows a simultaneous focus on infrastructure and job creation—potentially boosting local economies while reinforcing security.
However, the success of this strategy will depend on sustained political will, transparent use of resources, intergovernmental collaboration, and the readiness of security forces.
If effectively implemented, it could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity and open the door for more inclusive national development.
