The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has issued a summons to Governors Hyacinth Alia of Benue State and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, along with the leadership of both state Houses of Assembly, requesting their appearance on Thursday, May 8.
This was announced in a statement released on Friday and signed by the committee’s head of Media, Chooks Oko.
Both the executive and legislative branches of the two states are expected to justify why the House of Representatives should not assume their constitutional duties in light of ongoing security concerns.
The committee’s action follows a petition filed by a civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, urging the House to intervene and take over legislative functions in both states.
The summons, signed by Committee Chairman Mike Etaba, emphasized that the concerned parties were already informed of the situation.
He stated, “Ours is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times. The parties have a wonderful opportunity to state their cases clearly so that Nigerians can know what is going on. Anarchy would never be given any space in our polity.”
